Event #4 Extra Credit

Image
The fourth event that I went to was to listen to our Professor Victoria Vesna who was a keynote speaker for the UCLA undergraduate Research Week. I really enjoyed this zoom because I was able to learn a lot about Professor Vesna and what her interests are and how she got started in the space that she is currently working in now. During her presentation she gives an overview of what over the course of her life has inspired her and what people have helped peak certain interests. An interesting fact that she shared was that her father was obsessed with Nikola Tesla and through her dad she became interested in the science world. She also expressed that she went to an art school as a kid but didn’t enjoy it because she wanted to learn about science. Professor Vesna was fascinated and intrigued by pyramids and how they were made and overall was so interested in the unknown. With the things you don’t see or would understand without digging deeper and understanding certain things at great deta...

Event #3 Nina Sobell

Image
For my third event of the quarter I had the pleasure of listening to Nina Sobell. It was an overall great presentation as she went over what she does and what she studies while also going over her journey and how she got so involved in her work. I learned so many incredible facts and concepts that I didn’t even think were possible. Her work consists of using people's brain waves in order to show different interesting facts about the human mind. For instance, she talked about how they used some technology that connects to the person's head and as a result it shoots out on a computer or paper a brainwave drawing. Brainwave drawings were created through their mental thoughts through brainwaves. She also describes they did the same set up on two different humans and showed that one person's thoughts can influence the other and they had the brain wave drawings and graphs to show for it. They learned a lot from these people's brain wave patterns. Electrodes were used to their...

Week 9 Space + Art

Image
Space is something that is so massive and amazing we are learning more information about it day in and day out. Over the course of history we have learned so much to try and better understand it but we still have so much more to learn. This is what makes space, the stars, and the planets unique and fascinating. Space was first heavily examined by Ancient Astronomers who did their best to try and name and understand what these objects and phenomenons in the sky were. They started to name the different planets based on Roman mythology and its gods. Many different Astronomers over the course of time have attempted to really understand and give their best hypothesis of how space and earth work together and just overall just try to make sense of it all. Space and its complexity was no easy feat to try and understand what exactly was in the sky and what order certain planets and stars were in. It was the unknown. One of the most famous and ambitious astronomers was a man named Nicolaus Coper...

Week 8 Nanotech + Art

Image
This week's subject of nanoscience is something that I have never even heard of but turns out is very much useful and important. One of the very first things I learned about this kind of science is the fact that it's a new way of thinking and using science. This is a more modern and adaptive piece of science that has a great effect on the field. This is some of the most up to date and ground breaking science that's going to allow scientists and technology to keep breaking through boundaries that were put in place. Journal of Nanotechnology and nano science research . Uniscience Publishers. (2022, May 11). Retrieved May 20, 2022, from https://unisciencepub.com/journal-of-nanotechnology-and-nano-science-research/ In order to understand what nanoscience is, the first thing you need to understand is that nano means dwarf while in science terms it is a billionth of a meter which is called a nanometer. The scale in which they use and reference is much different from the rest. Thi...

Event #2 Jessica Irish

Image
Attending Jessica Irish’s zoom call today was a great experienced. Her topic of plastics and the impact and issues that it causes was quite eye opening for me. For starters, this presentation reflected a few different aspects from this class. One aspect of her project that I’ve learned that is similar to the things in this class is all the research and science that is intertwined with the art. Jessica’s work you can tell took a lot of research and had a big science aspect as she was breaking down the plastic molecules such as polyethylene and the facts behind what exactly affects the whales and how much plastic us humans use and have used using facts. This made for her presentation to be so impactful and effective. It also refers to some technology and the modernization which we have also learned about in this class. These parts of her zoom gave me some inspiration for my potential topic for my final and her Q & A after viewing her video was very helpful. She walked us through how ...

Week 7 Neuroscience + Art

Image
This week's topic of neuroscience is my favorite and most interesting subject matter so far that we have studied and examined in this class. The brain is so dynamic and complicated which makes it so unique. Your brain has so many functions and allows for us humans to do literally everything. One piece from the lecture that stuck out to me was the structure of the nervous systems. The concept and idea that we can physically draw what the nervous system looks like blows my mind. The art looks so basic and simple initially but it's far from that. These drawings are very detailed but this concept shows the correlation between science and art. These two both co-exist with one another, which is something I’m learning more and more throughout this course. Another interesting thing about sleep that I learned was the fact that 95% of our dreams that we have we don’t even remember or recall. Rem sleep and dreams are still being heavily studied and we still have lots more to learn about wh...

Week 6 BioTec + Art

Image
The concept and idea of bio art is so interesting and different from all the different types of art forms that we’ve studied so far in this class. Bio art for starters can be described as there are artists that think it's bio art because you are studying the tissues and using examples at the cellular level while the other consensus is just using images that have been collaborated and discussed between scientists is enough to be qualified as bio art. I find this so interesting because this class has continued to show how creative and subjective art is. Bio Art: Artlink Magazine. Bio Art | Artlink Magazine. (n.d.). Retrieved May 6, 2022, from https://www.artlink.com.au/issues/3430/bio-art/ This week's lectures go into detail about all the experiments that are going on and that involve the concept of bio art. For instance, lecture number two explains how scientists use different tissues and DNA for their experiments where artists are present. One of the most interesting experiment...
