Event #2 Jessica Irish
Attending Jessica Irish’s zoom call today was a great experienced. Her topic of plastics and the impact and issues that it causes was quite eye opening for me. For starters, this presentation reflected a few different aspects from this class. One aspect of her project that I’ve learned that is similar to the things in this class is all the research and science that is intertwined with the art. Jessica’s work you can tell took a lot of research and had a big science aspect as she was breaking down the plastic molecules such as polyethylene and the facts behind what exactly affects the whales and how much plastic us humans use and have used using facts. This made for her presentation to be so impactful and effective. It also refers to some technology and the modernization which we have also learned about in this class. These parts of her zoom gave me some inspiration for my potential topic for my final and her Q & A after viewing her video was very helpful. She walked us through how she made her project and the idea of using a sketch book I thought was very unique. She said her sketchbook was really useful in keeping her thoughts organized and just getting her ideas down on paper. I also would like for my project to be impactful and something that people can really engage with and learn from. Her work was to help show awareness about the situation with us humans consuming plastics and how it affects whales as well as other animals in the sea. I also thought it was very unique that her inspiration was her daughter and her mom. Her daughter loves whales and this helped sparked her interest and this was her "why" and motivation to make the presentation. I recommend this to every single classmate I have. This video was very informative and is something that everyone uses and the future could be in trouble if we don’t get a handle on the problem or come up with an efficient solution. Other facts that I really enjoyed learning about was that the average human uses around 234 lbs a year of plastic. Also that plastic companies would rather make plastic beads rather than use recycled pieces of plastic, this as you can imagine is a problem and adds to the issue. I also learned about the history of petroleum and how whales have affected history. Overall this was just very informative and I’m so happy I attended.
