Week 7 Neuroscience + Art

This week's topic of neuroscience is my favorite and most interesting subject matter so far that we have studied and examined in this class. The brain is so dynamic and complicated which makes it so unique. Your brain has so many functions and allows for us humans to do literally everything. One piece from the lecture that stuck out to me was the structure of the nervous systems. The concept and idea that we can physically draw what the nervous system looks like blows my mind. The art looks so basic and simple initially but it's far from that. These drawings are very detailed but this concept shows the correlation between science and art. These two both co-exist with one another, which is something I’m learning more and more throughout this course. Another interesting thing about sleep that I learned was the fact that 95% of our dreams that we have we don’t even remember or recall. Rem sleep and dreams are still being heavily studied and we still have lots more to learn about what is really going on during dreams and whats making them happen.

Another aspect of this week's lectures and modules are the details referring to how we sleep, dream, and what goes on while we are sleeping. We begin to learn about the great early philosophers that help try and understand the unconscious aspect of sleep and how in fact we as humans dream and enter an unconscious state. This complicated and sophisticated human function was first debated and heavily studied by two Frued and Jung who were both heavily studying this concept. They both had similar thoughts and learned as much as they could about the subject but had some different thoughts when it came to the unconscious and dreaming aspect. For instance, Jung thought that Freud was wrong for taking the stance that the unconscious behavior was a place that was negative and didn’t allow for creativity to take place. This was much different from Jung, he thought this is in fact where freedom and creativity belonged. Although they didn’t see eye to eye on that concept this biggest separator was the fact that religion and its involvement drew them farther apart.

  1. Hi Jack, I really enjoyed your post this week. The brain is an amazing organ and the abilities that it has also intrigue me. I think that humans are capable of so much and it's very cool to learn more about our bodies and all the various things that make us who we are.

  2. Hi Jack,
I learned a lot from reading your blog post this week. One thing that stood out to me the most was your inclusion of sleep. It was interesting how the ideology behind sleep has drastically changed over time. This demonstrates the kind of progressive world we live in and it shows that the more we modernize our technology, the more we will learn. Great work!
