Week 9 Space + Art

Space is something that is so massive and amazing we are learning more information about it day in and day out. Over the course of history we have learned so much to try and better understand it but we still have so much more to learn. This is what makes space, the stars, and the planets unique and fascinating. Space was first heavily examined by Ancient Astronomers who did their best to try and name and understand what these objects and phenomenons in the sky were. They started to name the different planets based on Roman mythology and its gods. Many different Astronomers over the course of time have attempted to really understand and give their best hypothesis of how space and earth work together and just overall just try to make sense of it all.


Space and its complexity was no easy feat to try and understand what exactly was in the sky and what order certain planets and stars were in. It was the unknown. One of the most famous and ambitious astronomers was a man named Nicolaus Copernicus who was not only an astronomer but he was also a mathematician which is quite interesting but a vital title in my opinion to try and decode space. He observed and believed that the sun was actually in the middle or center of all the planets. He wasn’t the only one who thought this was the case but since he was a mathematician he had math to back it up. He tried to justify and explain the earth’s rotational tilt and its axis. As well as try to explain how the earth rotates in a circular rotation. Unfortunately, his discoveries and math to back it up was put on hold because he knew he would get in trouble with the church for his discoveries. It's crazy to see how much information and knowledge these people were able to figure out without having any of our modern technology. Which is just that much more amazing and impressive.

  1. Hi Jack. I really enjoyed reading your post for this week. Similarly to you, space is something that is extremely interesting for me. The incomprehensible size as well as the unknown of it are what makes it so interesting. I liked your example about Copernicus and how his discoveries actually cost him his life. It is very crazy to realize this as he was actually correct in his views.

  2. Hey Jack. The images you used for your post were great and the content was fantastic. Space truly is vast in its scale and I appreciated how you recognized that in your work. I also really enjoyed how you offered the historical perspective of ancient mathematicians and the impact that they have had to this day. As our knowledge increases over time it will be amazing to see just how much we can learn about this universe.
