Week 4 Medicine + Technology + Art

Image
This week's lectures and readings have really expanded my horizons when thinking about art and the body. These two concepts are very similar in several different ways. The body is a form of living art and so are all the bones and body parts. Our body anatomy has been used for years to understand art and art has been expressed over our bodies. The concept of technology and art would also come back to display itself. 7 myths about the human body that are often mistaken as facts . The Irish News. (2018, September 4). The results from these MRI’s are very detailed and precise and can be looked at as an example of art. I’ve also received several X-rays which is another aspect...

Event #1 We're All Living in the Estroworld

Image
Today I had the pleasure to join a zoom where Marry Maggic talked about several projects she's done and some that she is currently actively working on. A lot of what she talked about this morning were things that I've never heard of or thought about. They were all interesting and out of the box ideas and concepts which is why she is so unique. Much of her talk was centered around estrogen and how society reacts to this word and how it affects the human body both male and female. Mary goes on to talk about how she wanted to take a deeper dive into Estrogen. She began by looking at it at a molecular level and looked at the Estrogen receptors which are active and present in Estrogen. She also goes on to talk about non-locality and "colonial logic" when she is referring to plastic and its history and how it is produced. The topic of plastic was one that she talked about for a while and one comment that she made that stuck with me was the fact that she said plastic is now...

Week 3 Robotics + Art

Industrialization is one of the most influential and important times in history. This not only changed technology and things were made and created but also affected people dramatically. The modernization that industrialization brought moved people from the countryside to the city in order to come and work as the farmers and their equipment were being overmatched. One of the most important and impactful inventions that was created was the printing press. This was a game changer in several ways where now information could be passed around quickly and the quality of the information improved. This one of the first examples of how effective and efficient the assembly line was. It also allowed for books to be made and allowed for religion and bibles and other books to be created. Niiler, E. Week 2 Math + Art

Image
This week's lectures and readings were quite interesting and eye opening as I didn't expect there to be a correlation and or relationship between math and art. I also felt like these two things were much different from one another but over the course of this week I learned a lot about these two. Art can be used through an expression of mathematics which I believe is quite incredible.  One thing that I thought was intriguing during the lecture was the discussion about Brunelleschi and his invention and understanding of linear perspective. The way in which he used math and numbers in order to understand how things should be scaled and look mathematically and artistically appropriate is truly amazing. These concepts had not yet been discovered so his realization was groundbreaking. This discovery drastically changed the future and was very important during the time period.  Another interesting aspect is that of fractals. Fractals can be used and seen through the illustration of a...

Week 1 Two Cultures

Image
Hi everyone, my name is Jack Filby and I'm a fourth year history major here at UCLA. Over the course of my life I've been exposed and have experienced both of the cultures but at different times in my life. I went to an art focused elementary school growing up. We often took classes that were specifically to learn about different art forms and time to reach inside our artistic minds and draw and color. Although many of my friends went to different schools that didn't have an emphasis on art but rather more math and sciences. As a result, our conversations about school were different.  Parent participation . Leonardo da Vinci eK-8 School. (2017, June 27). Retrieved April 2, 2022, from https://www.leonardodavincischool.org/overview/parent-participation Although I've been exposed to a lot of art through my previous school and my parents who are heavily involved in art as well I've grown a fascination for what is in the ocean and have gravitated towards science in som...
