Week 1 Two Cultures

Hi everyone, my name is Jack Filby and I'm a fourth year history major here at UCLA. Over the course of my life I've been exposed and have experienced both of the cultures but at different times in my life. I went to an art focused elementary school growing up. We often took classes that were specifically to learn about different art forms and time to reach inside our artistic minds and draw and color. Although many of my friends went to different schools that didn't have an emphasis on art but rather more math and sciences. As a result, our conversations about school were different.

Although I've been exposed to a lot of art through my previous school and my parents who are heavily involved in art as well I've grown a fascination for what is in the ocean and have gravitated towards science in some ways. I visited the Boston this past summer where I fished and went whale watching.

I learned a lot about whales and on the ship that was touring us around in the ocean allowing us to see these beautiful creatures up close. The facts about animal life and how the ecosystem works and how they communicate is all very much interesting. The way in which the animals move in the water and amongst each other to me is an art form is its own right. Art comes in all different variations and having an art background has allowed me to enjoy science aspects of marine life much better. Fishing was also very enjoyable for me as I had a lot of fun and many the different kinds of baits and lures were like small art pieces in my eyes. Both cultures are very much apparent in my life and is something that are different but can also be similar is some instances.
